The Work You Will Do:
Traffic Specialist IV – Safety, District Traffic Operations
This position contributes to the Department’s ability to meet Mission Critical requirements of providing a safe and efficient transportation system for all users by investigating intersections and segments to develop improvements to improve traffic safety. It also includes reviewing projects on local roadways to improve safe routes to schools and to increase the number of children that walk to school.

Annual Salary Range:
$64,792.03 - $83,848.51 annual range
A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 will be added to the annual salary.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
Develop and review engineering reports and studies. This includes preparing and disseminating the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) tracking reports, study documentation and presentation of findings and conclusions, analysis of engineering data, and coordination of resources necessary to produce reports.
Develop and manage professional and contractual service contracts, and other types of agreements, that support traffic operations. This includes project management responsibilities associated with procuring contracts, issuing task work orders, reviewing contract deliverables, reviewing and processing invoices, coordinating Department personnel and other agencies associated with work under the contract, preparing contract correspondence, maintaining project files, and actively participating in project meetings.
Participate in meetings, on committees, task teams and other groups with internal and external customers to represent traffic engineering interests. Includes, providing useful commentary and review of work products as well as developing correspondence and follow-up contact as needed.
Assist the District Traffic Safety Program Engineer with coordinating project production with the Department’s Work Program. This includes coordinating with the district’s Work Program Unit so that project schedule and control can be efficiently managed. Assist with the development and coordination of the District's safety work program. Assist Traffic Safety Program Engineer in implementing business and related plans to guide resource allocation and achieve unit performance targets. Includes collaborating with others in plan development, reporting plan results, linking performance targets to SMART (Specific, measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) objectives in staff expectations, and identifying and making resource recommendations.
Addresses complaints/concerns for safety and bicycle/pedestrian issues and requests for information from internal and external customers.
Assists with the implementation and management of the Safe Routes To School (SRTS) program.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of traffic engineering principles and practices; Knowledge of management principles and practices; Knowledge of traffic operations analysis and study techniques; Knowledge Florida's Strategic Highway Safety Plan
Skills in:
- Skill in effective oral communications; Skill in use of personal computers and ability to use Microsoft Office® (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access & Outlook); Skill in effective written communications; Skill in interpreting and disseminating traffic engineering related data
Ability to:
- Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret engineering data; Ability to manage workload to produce on time resolutions to problems; Ability to guide, manage, and work with diverse groups of people; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
The incumbent may be required to work extra hours. During a declared emergency event, the incumbent will be required to assist the District as needed. Responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of Section 215.422, Florida Statutes (FS) related State Comptroller's rules and Department of Transportation invoice's processing and warrant distribution procedures
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma and four years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and has an Engineer in Trainee (EIT) certification in either Florida or another State; or An active International Municipal and Signal Association (IMSA) Sign and Pavement Marking certification. An associate of arts or science degree in computer science, engineering technology, or similar relevant area of study can substitute for two years of the required experience. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, computer science, engineering technology or similar relevant area of study can substitute for four years of experience.
