The Work You Will Do
This is a highly responsible professional position assigned to work under the direct supervision of the Training Manager on human trafficking, mandated inspector standardization, quality assurance, training, and educational activities. This position has designated signature authority in the event the Bureau Chief or Deputy Bureau Chief is unavailable. Specific duties may include one or more of the following areas of specialization: Risk-Based inspections, Quality Assurance, Training, Food Safety, HACCP, Lodging, Inspection Technology, Fire Safety, and Human Trafficking.
Incumbent is responsible for maintaining a thorough, working knowledge of applicable statutes, codes, rules and FDA Food Code. Performs initial training of new division field staff regarding policy and procedures, mandatory educational requirements, and standardization using the certification procedures as required. Extensive travel is required to conduct sanitation and safety training of division field staff to ensure uniformity and compliance with the approved inspection techniques. Submits required documentation for training, standardizations, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
Monitors and evaluates program quality assurance and training effectiveness performed by the seven district offices. Plans, develops and coordinates implementation strategies for program improvement activities to ensure responsive, effective, and efficient delivery of program services to division staff and the industry in accordance with federal, state, and department objectives. Assists in providing food service, lodging, and fire safety training to satisfy the mandatory continuing education credit hours for division field staff. Provides technical assistance to the district offices and Deputy Bureau Chief.
Serve as “FDA Standardized Food Safety Inspection Officer” and successfully meet al requirements for standardization. Demonstrate proficiency in the required performance areas as described in the “FDA Procedures for Standardization of Retail Food Safety Inspection Officers”. Perform Standardization of inspection staff (candidates) and confirm the inspector (candidate) possesses a high level of knowledge, understanding and application of food safety principles to promote uniformity of regulatory retail food inspections statewide. The application of the standardization procedure will ensure that the inspector (candidate) recognizes foodborne illness risk factors, food code interventions, and good retail practices. The procedure will confirm that the inspector (candidate) can achieve practical and immediate correction of Out of Compliance (OOC) foodborne illness risk factors during the inspection, can effectively communicate with the establishment’s staff, can understand and apply HACCP principles and use necessary inspection equipment in a risk-based, real-time regulatory inspection.
Responsible for integrating the use of computer software and desktop or portable hardware to enhance personal and organizational performance, including spreadsheet, word processing, scheduling, e-mail, licensing and internet applications, and other technology required by the department.
Performs inspections of public lodging and food service establishments as required in complex situations requiring a higher degree of technical expertise.
Represents the division at various intra-departmental, inter-departmental, professional and civic meetings regarding risk-based inspections and risk assessment and their applications to regulation of food service establishments. Periodically functions and serves as liaison with federal agencies, other state agencies and industry in the regulation of public lodging and food service establishments. Assists with program evaluations using the FDA National Standards for Retail Food Programs. Attends training and meetings as required.

Minimum Requirements
- Five or more years of industry-related experience OR
- Bachelor degree (in any field) and one year hospitality management experience
- Valid Driver license.
**Industry-related experience is considered to be hotel or restaurant management, restaurant operations, field or laboratory experience in environmental or public health, food sanitation or quality control.**
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with food service and/or lodging inspection experience.
SPECIAL NOTES: This position is part of the Office of Program Quality (Plan Review) Training Unit. This position will be located in the Tampa or Orlando district office and requires extensive business travel within the State of Florida. The incumbent will be required to attain and maintain certification as a Standardized Food Safety Inspection Officer through the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's certification procedures.
