This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway systems.

Annnual Salary Range:
$43,413.89 - $56,182.69
Anticipated Bi-Weekly Pay:
$1,869.30 ($48,601.68/annually)
A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $796.60 will be added to the annual salary.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to: check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Assists in the repair of operated equipment. Cleans and washes equipment. Oversees crews performing maintenance activities.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Mathematical calculations
- Standard safety rules and procedures the procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures
Skills in:
- Operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles
- Completing job related reports and forms
- Communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions
Ability to:
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment; train others
- Read and understand job related materials
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic
- Stand for an extended period of time.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicle. A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire. Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
Other Job Related Duties:
- Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license is required at time of hire and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. While on duty status, the position's incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety sensitive functions. To be in compliance with the district loss prevention program, the Florida Department of Transportation Loss Prevention Procedure, and be aware of reducing personal injury and vehicular accidents. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years
