The Work You Will Do:
Master Equipment Mechanic
This position will perform skilled mechanical and technical work in the diagnosis and repair of various components in automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Serve as the lead in performing skilled mechanical and technical work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.
Plan and schedule shop workload for the mechanics and provide customer service support by communicating with internal customers, shop clerk and vendors, in the absence of the Shop Superintendent. Oversees proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders and review shop work order data in the Fleet Program. Instructs and aids other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
Perform preventative maintenance work to ensure equipment is maintained and in proper working order. Perform periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.
Comply with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies. Assist in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities. Elevate questions/items of concern to Shop Manager.
Submit requests for parts and supplies. Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders. Purchase parts and shop supplies as P-card holder and is accountable for proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders. Operates personal computers and printers for processing warehouse commodity issue tickets and work orders.
Respond to emergency road service calls and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location. Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment
- Diagnostic equipment
- The use of repair manuals
- Purchasing rules and regulations
- All waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies
Skilled in:
- Providing instruction to mechanics and helpers
- The use of hand tools and mechanical equipment
- Replacing, repairing and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc.
- Documenting work performed and materials used on work orders
- Performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment
- Customer service
Ability to:
- Interpret specialized automotive testing and monitoring equipment
- Work independently
- Operate motor vehicles
- Troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems
- Perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance
- Assist in body and fender repair work
- Lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend
- Use appropriate safety equipment
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Perform minor welding
- Operate and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicle (cmv) with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 lbs. or more
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes at the time of hire
Other Job-Related Requirements:
- Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
- While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License the incumbent is required to possess (CDL Class B), or on routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
- During emergencies and nature disasters, the incumbent shall be available to work non-standard and/or extended hours.
- The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
- The incumbent must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with/or around Department of Corrections inmates
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess a High School Diploma, or Certificate of High School Equivalency, and three years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
- An additional year of experience, for a total of four years’ experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
- A valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire.
This position requires a valid Class B driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
