Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. The department’s mission is to “work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.”

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Senior Pharmacist. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting.
- Responsible for supervising, training, and coaching a group of Pharmacy Technicians.
- Interprets, dispenses, monitors and verifies physician order, supervises pharmacy technician in filling medication orders. Responsible for restocking the automated dispense system with the assistance of the Pharmacy Technicians in accordance with the established policy and procedures.
- Consults with physicians and nurses regarding physician’s orders.
- Monitors inventory and advises assistant pharmacy directors on ordering medications.
- Responsible for the appropriate handling of control substances according to Federal and State guidelines.
- Responsible for monitoring the physician reorder procedure and retrieving the restock, returns, and inventory items not in stock reports.
- Handles Medication Exception Requests in a timely and efficient manner according to established policy and procedures.
- Consults with other pharmacists and clinical pharmacists, reference materials and other related sources about resident medication, new drug therapies and related matters.
- Supervises the removal of outdated medications for the Techs assigned area.
- Responsible for the monitoring program to remove deteriorated pharmaceuticals to a quarantine area and the preparation for pick up by waste company.
- Participation in a monitoring program to remove manufacturer drug recalls.
- Follows outlined procedures for opening, closing, and security of the department.
- Participates in on-call rotation with other Pharmacists.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, standards and terminology used in the practice of pharmacy.
- Knowledge of drug properties and usage including the effects of drug interactions.
- Ability to administer a pharmacy or a section of a pharmacy.
- Ability to compound and dispense pharmaceutical drugs, medications, and supplies.
- Ability to formulate and implement pharmacy policies, methods, specifications and procedures.
- Ability to provide training to staff members.
- Ability to evaluate drug therapy against set criteria.
- Ability to develop program policy manuals, rules and program monitoring methodologies, techniques and plans.
- Ability to develop and maintain a perpetual inventory control system.
- Ability to evaluate pharmacy methods, procedures, and services.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to monitor and coordinate clinical pharmacy services such as drug information, disease assessment, and medications management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Licensure as a Pharmacist in accordance with Florida Statute 465 and one year of professional experience in the practice of pharmacy.
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university in pharmacy can substitute for the required experience.
- A Pharm.D. from an accredited college or university can substitute for the required experience.
- A doctorate from an accredited college or university in pharmacy can substitute for the required experience.
