Once you join the FDC, there are many career advancement opportunities that progress from entry level as a Correctional Officer to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major and Colonel. From there, management positions include Assistant Wardens and Wardens. Correctional Officers have the opportunity to join special teams such as Rapid Response Teams, Crisis Response Team, Interdiction Units, K-9 Units, and many other special team opportunities.
Correctional Officer Sergeants are responsible for the supervision, protection, care, custody, control, and physical restraint, when necessary, of inmates at a correctional institution or facility and functioning as lead officer over two or more Correctional Officers assigned to inmate dormitories, confinement areas, work areas or work squads where assignment of a supervisor is not warranted; supervising and participating in the activities of the control room or the main gate of an institution; directing the activities of an entire facility on a shift. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code.
Compensation and Benefits
- Minimum Annual Salary $50, 336.00
- Annual salary additive of approximately $1,200 when employed in Indian River, Martin, - Okeechobee, or St. Lucie counties.
- Annual salary additive of approximately $2,500 when employed in Palm Beach, Broward, Dade or Monroe counties.
- Annual uniform and shoe allowance of $325.00.
- Criminal Justice Incentive Program (CJIP) up to $1,560.00 annually ($130.00 per month)

- Recently Retired? Effective July 1, 2024, there is no longer a reemployment limitation; on the 7th calendar month from the member's distribution date, there are no restrictions for working as a FRS employer. You will not be required to repay any prior distributions, and you may continue receiving distributions from the Investment Plan or Pension Plan without interruption.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Be at least 18 years of age (no maximum age restriction)
- Be a United States Citizen ( by birth or naturalization)
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.

- Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
- MUST have active reserve military experience with at least one year of experience working full-time as a correctional officer at a Department of Corrections facility.
